Argos is the shipwright who built the ship which enabled Jason to get the Golden Fleece in order to set his mother free. This ship was called Argo in honour of his builder. It was extremely fast. Hercules, Orpheus and Theseus were part of its crew, the Argonauts.
There was also Argos or Argus, prince of Argos, who had one hundred eyes of which fifty were always open.
In reality…
Argos is a greek city, in the Peloponnese. It was founded in the Bronze Age and is believed to be the oldest city of Grece. It plays a major role in the greek mythology and is associated to many legends (Perseus, the Danaides, and so on). It was also a great artistic pole in archaic and classical ages.
In the middle of the VII th century BC, Argos was the most powerful city of the Peloponnese. Its rival Sparta overshadowed it in the next century, but came back in the V th century and destroyed Mycenae and Tirynthe (468 BC). In 421 BC, it joined in the Peloponnesian War, at the side of Athens and other cities allied against Sparta.
Population in 1991: 22.256 inhabitants.
