Armin Selig had an unnamed source for information on the Stargate program. He knew what and where the Gate is, and he knew what had been discovered about how it works. He also knew that there were nine to twelve SG-teams (there were formerly nine teams, but three others had just been created), and that Jack led SG-1. He even knew that the lightnings that had been seen in the night sky lately were the explosion of alien spaceships.

His meeting with Jack was just in order to have an interview for his article, but he did not have any confirmation, and he was killed by a hit and run which was listed officially as an accident.

Hammond: It was an accident.
O'Neill: Yes, sir.
